fifty and counting [50/365]

DSC_9984(2)Fifty posts, and not one cat post … until now, that is!

We often wonder if there isn’t a bit of sheepdog in our McDuff ๐Ÿ™‚. The rituals, when it’s time to go do bed … his built-in clock is always at work. If I try to sit here, at the computer, any later than usual, I’ll soon feel a very soft paw on my arm. Touching … very gently, while holding the other paw on the armrest of the chair.

Okay, so I get up and go to the washroom, otherwise those reminders will only get more intense. He lingers around, just outside the bathroom door, while I wash and brush my teeth, and here’s the really weird thing: He wants to sniff my fingers, to smell the toothpaste. If I deliberately leave a little water with toothpaste scent, he gets all excited and licks all my fingers on that hand.

box_cat-minWhen that procedure is over, and I’ve gone to bed, he goes back and waits for my husband to go. He always goes later than I, because I want to read for a while and the cat seems to know this. Same thing happens … after a while he urges my husband to go too, follows him to the washroom [they don’t do the toothpaste ritual, though], and then into the bedroom. It’s as if he’s herding us to the bedroom at the strike of midnight. Strangely, no waking up in the morning, though. Here he is, sleeping in the Tassimo box, which reminds me; we had to turn the fancy, new coffee machine back!

IMG_2052I thought I’d writtenย about the new Keurig, in some post earlier, but now I can’t find it. We bought it just before Christmas, and nowย it broke down totally. It was veryย computerized, with touch-screen and everything … the whole system just ceased to function. At one point I was able to ‘reset to factory defaults’. Didn’t help. Unplugged … didn’t help. Eventually I had to just give up, and turned it back in to Costco. They’re really good with that — no questions asked, money back. We still had our trustyย Tassimo, though, which is functioning flawlessly after, soon, three years.

  1. Ooh, finally a cat post! I’ve been missing McDuff. I think cats are great with routines, mine is too. She doesn’t herd me to bed, but she has other rituals, including following me to the bathroom and putting her paws on the tub when I’m having a shower. Then of course when I accidentally spray some water on her, she runs. She also grew in the habit of welcoming me at the door when I’m coming home – she stands right behind the door, checks that I’m back and then pretends she’s not interested and goes away. I know better ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I’ve held myself back a little, in order not to go overboard, with the cat posts ๐Ÿ™‚ If I were to take a bath, he’d stand there, with his paws on the tub … because the bubbles are so intriguing.

Isn’t that so funny, how they sort of ‘put on an act’, appearing NOT interested ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. LOL, the best way to get attention from a cat you’ve just met, is to turn the tables: to “pretend” that you’re not interested and completely IGNORE them… Works like a charm (and drives their owners batty; )
Your McDuff is such a great subject Bekah. Love these!
Sucks about the coffee machine though! Ours is the older model (thank goodness!) There are just too many “Bells ‘n Whistles” on the new one and, like anything loaded with electronics, too much to go wrong ):
And you DID write about the machine, and not that long ago; but it started out talking about using the little refillable cups…

        1. I know! [about the ignore] … also people who can’t stand cats … never is a cat ever so drawn to a person, but then.

Yes, the more bells ‘n whistles, electronics … the more stuff that can break down. I think these Keurig 2.0 have a lot more stuff than the old version. The Tassimo has only one thing, and that’s the bar code reader.

            1. I found the one about refillable cups. That’s one of the advantages of Keurig, as opposed to Tassimo, where there aren’t any refillable. But I thought I’d posted when we bought it … with a picture of it. But going through my media files, not even the picture was there, so I must have dreamt it.

      2. You definitely aren’t posting too many cats. I think you have more ducks than cats actually ๐Ÿ˜‰ I try hard to limit my cat posts to once a week. Sometimes I fail. What I love about cats most is that they have personalities, quirks and are fun to get to know…

        1. Yeah, when I think of the three cats I’ve had … how entirely different personalities they’ve been!

There could be an increase in cat posts, as this daily post moves along ๐Ÿ˜‰

          1. I’m all for more cat posts ๐Ÿ™‚ But then, of course, I’m biased…

I’ve had three different cats at different times of my life, and each was completely different too. But under the smart facade of disinterestedness, they all cared for me (well, and the food I gave them) after all.

            1. Yes, my first [Hadassah] was a Persian Blue, second, Murphy, was a Sacred Birman, and McDuff is … grey. Worlds apart when it comes to personality! All good ๐Ÿ™‚

              1. All my cats were domestic cats – I mean, no breed – and still all were different. My current tabby is the most perfect, I think, she’s great indoors, well-behaved and just the right degree of cuddly ๐Ÿ™‚ She often sits at my feet when I’m working like a dog…

                1. None of my three have been much of a cuddler. They’ve shown affection, in their own way, I guess. I’d love to have a real cuddler ๐Ÿ™‚ like you see in the commercials …

  2. Sorry about the java machine! Not good. We have a new Kurig too, love it. One issue is the water tank is too small, just needs constant filling but it makes dandy coffee. Your cat is so gorgeous!

    1. That was one thing that was really good — the water tank was fairly big, filled perhaps every second day, depending. The coffee was good.

McDuff thanks you … he’s blushing a little now ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. What I haven’t figured out is whether Theo likes the lotion so he’s attracted to it, or whether he recognizes it as an artificial smell and is grooming me to get it off.

        1. I’ve actually thought the same. But then again … he doesn’t do it with Dawn. But if I’ve touched something with bleach in it, he almost wants to bite the fingers … he gets sort of agitated.

  3. LOL @ McDuff having ‘herding instinct’. So did Mingflower! 11 PM & she was ‘herding’ me into bedroom! I would have to get into the bed & wait for 15 minutes & then get back up to use the bathroom…what a funny girl she was.
Nylablue liked to play @ 11 PM>>for 15-20 minutes & then I was ‘allowed’ to get ready for bed.
Dharth henry still being a ‘kitten’ technically until July thinks 11 PM is play time & he plays until after midnite….he never herds me to bed but when he is done; he pushed the bedroom door to close it goes into his carrier…..
So he is a ‘self-herding’ feline, hahahahahaha!!!
Love McDuff’s photo’s…he is so handsome!
    Love to all, Sherri-Ellen
